POET

RED HERRING

All too willing to give chase, we
dash off headlong, shout follow me!
Each day heralds new pursuits,
unleashed hounds and riding boots;

it matters not what sort of quarry,
the commonest being good green money.
The hunt itself is seldom questioned,
entitlements ordained, ourselves destined;

no sooner is the fox cornered, trapped,
we seek another trophy to distract
us from the marrow we're loathe to face:

what's really going on here in the first place.
